PEX pipe is a flexible tubing made of polyethylene that has been cross-linked by a chemical or physical process. This improves the strength and durability of the pipe, while also increasing its flexibility. Because of these benefits, plumbers often recommend switching to PEX in older homes to avoid costly water damage repairs. PEX pipes are easy to work with, requiring fewer fittings than copper or galvanized steel pipes. This cuts down on installation costs and reduces the chance of leaks due to faulty joints. In addition, PEX is able to withstand higher safe operating temperatures and pressures than traditional pipe materials. Unlike copper pipes, PEX pipe does not contain any lead, which is considered a hazardous material. This makes it a safer choice for homeowners with young children or babies. PEX is also resistant to rust and corrosion, which means it will last longer than other types of plumbing systems. Because PEX is flexible, it can travel through walls and floors without requiring additional support. This helps to keep water pressure consistent throughout a home and reduces noise from pipe rattling. Additionally, PEX can be connected to hot and cold water fixtures at different points in a house, eliminating the need for multiple connections. Another benefit of PEX is that it can withstand more extreme temperatures than other types of plumbing systems, making it ideal for use in areas of the house that experience hot or cold weather fluctuations. This includes kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. This feature can help to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat or cool these areas, cutting down on utility bills and reducing carbon emissions. While PEX is safe to use for water distribution, it is important to install a whole-home water filtration system. This will ensure that any chemicals that leach from the pipe do not reach your faucets and can prevent issues like soap scum, hard water stains, and other unwanted deposits. The best way to connect PEX pipes is through push-fit connections. These fittings have a plastic compression ring and a brass nut that are inserted over the ends of the pipe. A ratchet clamping tool then squeezes the ring and tightens it around the pipe, creating a seal. The other option is to use a stainless steel clamp, which works similarly by placing a steel ring over the end of the pipe and then inserting a fitting into it. This method requires a special ring that can be removed once the connection is made. PEX-AL-PEX (also known as multilayer PEX) pipes have an aluminum layer sandwiched between two layers of regular PEX tubing. This layer stops oxygen diffusion, which can corrode the metal components in plumbing systems. Additionally, the aluminium layer provides some rigidity to the tube, so it retains its shape when bent.
